About Captain Josie
Coming from a family of Coast Guard Navigators, she has been on and around boats her whole life. She started to get serious about sailing while living in Seattle in 1991.
By 1998 she owned her own boat as a single woman. She then went on to learn to single-hand the boat and then spent 5 months cruising the Bahamas as a single-hander in 2000.
Captain Josie realized that learning to single-hand is important if you want to be a good mate on board. When 2 people are sailing and you are on watch you are single-handing and it's important to know how to handle things while you are alone or in an emergency. That is why she has been so successful at teaching other women and couples how to sail together and how to work together as a team.
If you have thought about learning to sail with an instructor who doesn't yell, who has been in the same shoes of being a woman who doesn't want to be yelled at, then you'll enjoy sailing with Captain Josie.
Captain Josie's Teaching Style:
First and foremost learning to sail should be fun.
Captain Josie puts on no pretense when sharing stories and anecdotes from previous trips and classes to illustrate and emphasize the topics she is teaching. You are gaining practical hands on experience every day in the 5 to 7 day cruise & learn courses.
Learning to sail is about making things logical so you are not just going through the motions but understanding things so you can remember. Captain Josie offers a non-competitive learning atmosphere, we review the skills and actions so that students can learn how to do things more efficiently and always to be done safely. We are always evaluating our activities so that we can make determinations on better decisions in the future.
Teaching 2 people or one couple at a time is her preference. Knowing that most couples will spend most of their time together alone is the reason for teaching couples how to sail together safely and without yelling at each other is as important as both knowing how to handle the boat in all circumstances.
